Solidarity with Ukraine – Scholars at Risk

The Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF provides funding to support researchers from Ukraine: Grants for “Scholars at Risk” and additional contributions for employing researchers from Ukraine within current SNSF-funded projects.

Please note

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has announed that as of 11 April 2022 the special funds reserved for "Scholars at Risk" from Ukraine has been used up.

It is therefore no longer possible to apply for SNSF Scholars at Risk Grants.

Researchers from Russia or other countries who are at risk can register with "external pageScholars at Risk" through the regular process.

Funding for “Scholars at Risk” from Ukraine

Funding is available for scholars and scientists from Ukraine immediately affected by the current crisis. This includes researchers that have either fled Ukraine very recently due to the war or who are currently abroad temporarily (e.g. research visit, field work) and cannot return to Ukraine. However, it excludes researchers who live outside Ukraine and who have a permanent position or residence permit abroad.

The SNSF grant can be used to employ scientists at the regular salary rates. The HR manager of your department will help with the salary calculation (HR confirmation is required for the SNSF application).

The maximum funding is CHF 110,000 (incl. employer’s share of the social insurance contribution) with a maximum duration of 12 months. Matching funds from the hosting Principle Investigator (PI) or the research group are strongly encouraged, from the outset or as prospect after the end of the SNSF grant. A cost-neutral extension of the grant for up to 12 additional months is possible.

Eligible for the Scholars at Risk grants are senior scientists and postdoctoral scientists. Doctoral students are only eligible if they have already submitted their thesis and only need to defense and publish articles.

Doctoral students who have not yet submitted their thesis, cannot be supported with a "Scholars at Risk" grant. These doctoral students can be integrated in an on-going SNSF project and the PI of this SNSF project can apply for additional financial contributions for employing researchers from Ukraine, see below.
