Application process

At ETH Zurich it is only possible to start Bachelor’s degree studies in the Autumn Semester. With this in mind, find out early about the admission requirements, necessary documents and submission deadlines.

Admission requirements with non-Swiss matriculation certificate.  

Before you apply for Bachelor’s degree studies at ETH, ask yourself the following questions:

ETH Zurich offers a large number of Bachelor’s degree programmes in the following disciplines:

Please familiarise yourself in advance with the current admission requirements and language requirements for ETH Bachelor’s degree programmes.

Please check before you apply whether you will need a visa to study in Switzerland and whether you satisfy the conditions for a student visa.

When and how do I apply?

For successful application we recommend that you proceed according to the below steps:

Application window for ETH’s Bachelor’s programmes:

  • 1 December – 31 March

If you do not yet have all required documents (e.g. the upper secondary school-leaving certificate, language certificate or certificate of university admission) at the time of application, please ensure that you submit them as soon as you receive them, and certainly by the published deadlines.

It is not possible to submit your application after the above deadline has expired.

Apply for your desired Bachelor’s degree programme online in eApply. You will be guided step by step through the online application process. Please complete the online form fully and truthfully.

For your application to be accepted, you must print out and sign the completed application form and send it by post to / hand it in at the Admissions Office together with all of the required documents by 31 March at the latest .

An application fee is charged for the processing of your application. Please note that this fee is not refundable.

Please note that fees are charged in Swiss Francs and that any extra transaction costs are charged to the payer.

Include the documents listed below with your application. Include official translations (the original + 1 copy) of any documents which are not in German, French, Italian or English (the translations must comply with DownloadETH’s binding standards for translations and transcripts (PDF, 56 KB)). The required documents are:

  • The online application form, printed out and signed
  • Curriculum vitae in table form with details of all schools/universities attended, work experience, etc. DownloadExample in German (PDF, 81 KB) / DownloadExample in German (DOCX, 20 KB)
  • *Upper secondary school-leaving certificate (e.g. High School Diploma, GCE, Lise Diplomasi, Apolitirio, IB Diploma) (copy). If you do not yet have the upper secondary school-leaving certificate, please tell us when you will be able to submit it. Send us a copy as soon as you receive it.
  • Mark sheets/transcripts from the last three years of school or those school transcripts available at the time of application (copy)
  • University transcript(s) (original): required if you have already undertaken studies or are currently attending a university or college
  • University diploma, diploma supplement, transcripts etc. from already completed studies (copy)
  • *Certificate of university admission (copy) for the desired academic discipline at a university in the home country (the country which issued your upper secondary school-leaving certificate), if required (see external pagecountry- and certificate-specific admission requirements)
  • *German language certificate (copy), if required (see Language requirements)
  • Payment confirmation (payment executed, if in online banking), only required if the application fee was not paid by credit card
  • Copy passport/identity card

Please do not submit any TOEFL, IELTS or DELF certificates; employment references; confirmations of internship/practicals; portfolios; awards (Olympics, Kangaroo awards, etc.); or letters of motivation. These are not relevant for admission to Bachelor’s degree studies and will not be considered.

* If the upper secondary school-leaving certificate , the German language certificate or the certificate of university admission have not yet been issued at the time of application, please ensure that you submit them as soon as you receive them and certainly by the published deadlines.

Submit the signed printout of your application form, together with the required documents, by post or hand it in to us at the counter by 31 March at the latest.

There is a metal letterbox at the entrance of our office where you can also deposit the envelope with your documents. You will receive an email confirmation as soon as we receive them.

Applications which are only submitted online will not be considered.

What happens next?

As soon as your application documents have reached the Admissions Office (in the proper form and by the deadline), we will check them. Please understand that this process can take a few weeks.

Missing documents (e.g. the upper secondary school-leaving certificate, the German language certificate or the certificate of university admission, if required) must be submitted as soon as you receive them and certainly by the published deadlines.

Within 4-6 weeks after receiving your application documents, we will inform you of the admissions decision (if all required documents are included) or we will provide information on further steps (if not all required documents are included).

Applicants who satisfy our admission requirements will be asked with the admissions decision to submit the originals of certain documents for the purposes of registration (duplicates or certified copies will not be accepted). The original documents will be returned to you during the Autumn Semester.

Applicants who must sit the entrance examination will receive a registration form with the admissions decision, plus information on the examination by email or post. They will be asked to submit originals of certain documents for the purposes of entrance exam registration (duplicates or certified copies will not be accepted). If you fail the entrance examination you may pick up your original documents immediately after the examination or make a request for them to be sent to you.

Original documents

The upper secondary school-leaving certificate, the certificate of university admission (if required) and the German language certificate (if required) must be submitted in the original to register for ETH studies or to register for the ETH entrance examination. Duplicates or certified copies are not accepted.

Swiss universities require the original of the upper secondary school-leaving certificate in order to issue the Swiss matriculation number (a small yellow sticker with the individual student number will be attached to the back of the upper secondary school-leaving certificate).
