Field Trips
Share your mission, inspire our students, and expose them to valuable practical experience
ETH Week features various formats throughout the week that aim to inspire students and foster their exchange with experts. One of them is the Field Trip: a unique opportunity for students to interact with subject-matter experts, interview them and empathize with their particular challenges. By doing so, the students connect abstract theoretical concepts to hands-on practical knowledge. While the students are working in an interdisciplinary team throughout the week, they are regrouped for the field trips in order to have access to a variety of experts and topics. After the field trip, students reconvene in their teams to share their learnings and ideas with their peers.
Types of field trips
Field trips are related to one or several of the sub-topics: Decarbonisation, Regenerative agriculture, Retail, Buildings/Infrastructure, Textile, and Electronics. They can take different formats:
- visiting key infrastructure
- visiting government agencies
- visiting research facilities
- testing or demonstrating tools and technologies
Possibilities are not limited to the above. Each organization can offer a field trip tailored to their expertise and field. Feel free to contribute different ideas!
Desired learning outcomes
While traditional higher education often focuses on studying a phenomenon, ETH Week is about experiencing it instead. Field trips play a key role here. The goal is to make the rather abstract topic of the circular economy tangible for students and/or to provide a new and unexpected perspective on the matter.
Procedure and timeline
Students will arrive as a group (10 - 15 students per group) at the location or starting point of the field trip. They will be accompanied by an ETH Week coach who is your main point of contact on the day. Field trips typically start around 11.00. The ideal duration is approx. 3 hours (incl. lunch, which students will bring along themselves). An individual schedule will be prepared for each field trip. There is some flexibility in terms of duration and starting time, depending on the location and type of activity. The following aspects should, however, be touched upon:
- brief introduction of yourself and your organization or project
- how your project is related to the circular economy
- what you would like students to take with them from the trip
Why host a field trip?
By offering a field trip you support a meaningful social initiative and contribute to our vital mission of inspiring the next generation of leaders, scientists, and entrepreneurs. A field trip is a great way to share your expertise and introduce your project and/or organization to a group of motivated and talented ETH students. This is a unique networking opportunity for both you and the students. Some of whom might well be your next intern or employee!
